Traveling with your pet

Travel together without compromises

In the last few years, the number of abandoned animals has strongly decreased, also thanks to the many campaigns and initiatives aimed at increasing awareness towards this issue and incentivizing owners to carry their pets with them on holiday.
From dog beaches to hostels for pets, now it's easy to arrange the perfect holiday for you and your pet. There are also many options for traveling together by train, bus and flight in Europe, giving you the possibility to reach (almost) every destination without compromises.
Keep in mind, though, that there are very strict rules regulating the transportation of animals and that they may change depending on the company and the mean of transport. For example, small pets are advantaged: the majority of the companies allow them on board and sometimes they even travel for free, especially on trains. Boarding your pet on a plane might be very expensive and, often, is not even allowed.

Traveling by train

Traveling by train with your pet is easy: most companies allow small pets onboard for free and large animals are welcome most of the times, but you will probably need to pay an extra fee.
Just remember to always bring a leash or a carrier and your pet's identification documents.

Traveling by bus

Sadly, it is almost never possible to carry your pet with you on a coach ride: among the others Flixbus, Eurolines, Ouibus and Autostradale don't accept small or large sized animals of their vehicles. This rule doesn't apply to guide dogs, which are always allowed.

Flying with your pet

Flying with your pet is not as difficult as one might think: many companies allow small pets in the cabin and, often, you will have the possibility to carry large ones in the hold of the aircraft.
Always keep in mind, though, that flying should be your last option if you want to travel with your pet as this is a very stressful experience for him, especially if he will travel in the hold, where noises are very loud and temperatures very low. We recommend you to read carefully your company's policies about flying with animals and make sure you carry with you his identification documents and vaccination records.

Terms and conditions

Alitalia allows small pets kept in a carrier with a maximum size of 24X40X20cm and weighing under 10kg. Large animals will be carried in the hold. Prices range from €40 to €200.

Vueling and Air France allow small pets, with extra fares depending if you are traveling on a national or an international flight. Large animals are not welcome on Vueling flights and they will have to travel via cargo if you are traveling with Air France.

Ryanair and Easyjet don't allow pets on board except for guide dogs.

British Airways does not allow pets on board and in the hold: they will travel via cargo.
