If you’re thinking about a Europe trip by train and you want to travel from Italy to France or vice versa, then you’ll probably get in a Thello train. This company, established in 2010, is specialized in train travels between these two countries in fact. On Wanderio, you can easily plan your best trip between France and Italy by train.

Thello is part of the Trenitalia group and lets you get to Paris or Southern France from several Central and Northern Italy cities. Whether you need a Milan to Paris train or want to get from Rome to Marseille, Thello will get you to your destination.

Several Italian cities are connected to France by Thello, both thanks to direct routes and routes with connections in collaboration with Trenitalia Frecciarossa high-speed trains. From major cities like Rome, Milan, Venice, Florence, and Bologna, to minor towns close to the French boundaries, such as Sanremo or Ventimiglia, you can find Thello trains that get you to France. Venice to Paris trains and the railway line between Milan and Marseille are the most important routes offered by Thello. In the first case, you can take the night train that leaves at 07:20 pm and arrives earlier than 10:00 am at your destination. On the Milan to Marseille route instead, a night train is available, but if you want to get to Nice you can even take one of the 3 day trains (at 7:10 am, 11:10 am and 03:10 pm) which will make you reach the city in less than 5 hours).

If you’re traveling with a small-sized pet weighing less than 5kg, you don’t need to book this service and you can carry them for free provided that they are in a carrier - in this case, your pet will be counted as part of your luggage. For bigger animals weighing from 5 to 50 kilos, you have to pay € 50 when getting on board. If you’re traveling on a night train, you can take only one pet with you and have to book the entire compartment. Your dog is not allowed to enter the restaurant car and should wear muzzle and leash every time they go outside of the compartment. Finally, pets must be recognizable thanks to microchips or tattoos, must be vaccinated against rabies and must have a passport.

You can carry up to two labeled pieces of baggage which total dimensions shall not be over 160 cm. Small-sized pets under 5 kg and foldable bicycles are counted as luggage while you will have to pay € 40 for every extra bag.

Bicycles are allowed on board only in case they are folded and put into a bag no bigger than 80x110x40 cm (if you’re traveling on a night train, total dimensions of the bag shall not be over 160 cm). You can’t take surfs, ski and windsurfs on Thello trains though.

Currently, there’s no wi-fi connection on Thello trains.

You can find a restaurant car on every Thello train, where you can have breakfast after your night train trip (which is included in the price if you choose to sleep in a cabin) or simply get a snack or have lunch and dinner during day journeys.

Two seats on every train are reserved to people with reduced mobility; if you need assistance for getting on or off the train, you have to contact the company at least 48 hours before the departure. In any case, Thello suggests traveling accompanied. People with reduced mobility get from 60% to 75% off their Standard tickets.

You can purchase your tickets from four months before the day you intend to leave. The ticketless option is available for traveling with Thello, as the PNR code is enough to identify your reservation. Printing your tickets is obviously recommended but not mandatory - the important thing is to have the PNR code with you, that is to say the alphanumeric code written in the confirmation email. Booking with Wanderio, you will receive the code via email, that you can also find on the Wanderio App, in the “My Trips” section.

Children under 4 travel for free, provided that they share their seat or bed with their accompanying person. Kids between 4 and 14 years old instead have 30% off the Adult fare ticket. Whoever is under 18 shall travel accompanied by an adult though.

You can buy Standard fare tickets until 24 hours before the train leaves. Even though you cannot change anything of your reservation, you can cancel it so as to be refunded up to the 90% of your ticket, provided that it costs more than € 8.

A limited number of tickets is available to be taken at the Go fare within a week before the day of the departure. This type of ticket doesn’t allow for changes, but in case you can’t travel anymore, you can cancel your reservation and request a refund (equal to the 50% of your ticket) up to 24 hours before the departure.

You can buy Smart tickets, which come in a limited number and are cheaper than the Standard ones, up to one week prior to the departure. However, you can ask neither for changes nor for canceling your reservation.

Every ticket with a special offer on the price follows the terms and conditions of the Special fare. You can’t change your ticket, but you can ask for a 75% refund within 14 days before the departure.

You can purchase your last minute night train ticket during the 24 hours before the train you chose leaves - obviously, this type of ticket doesn’t allow for changes or cancellations.

For one to three people, a cabin is the best solution. Here you can find beds of 180x80 cm with sheets, duvet and pillowcase, as well as individual towels, travel bag with shampoo and shower gel, a small bottle of water and a pair of slippers. A welcome cocktail is waiting for you, while a good breakfast in the restaurant car is included in the price.

A compartment is the ideal (and cheapest) solution for groups and families. Generally, you can sleep in a mixed compartment, even though you can book a women-only department upon availability. Beds (180x80 cm) are equipped with sheets and you will find a small bottle of water in your compartment. There’s a shared bathroom and if you want to have breakfast on the train, you can buy it at the restaurant car or from the serving cart.
