from Rome to Gallipoli

Getting from Rome to Gallipoli by train

The demand for going from Rome to Gallipoli is incredibly high especially during summer - for many Italian young guys, spending the holidays on the beautiful Salento beaches is a must-do! If you don’t know how long is the train ride from Rome to Gallipoli, then we have to tell you it’s fairly long, due to the distance between the two cities and to the lack of direct train connections. If you’re taking a train though, you should know the departure station can either be Rome Termini or Rome Tiburtina, both of which are well connected to the city underground, while the arrival station in Gallipoli is very close to the main central avenue. The fastest way to get to the lively Salento town is to take a Frecciargento (a type of high speed train offered by Trenitalia) to Lecce; then, you should change with a regional train to Gallipoli (be aware that in Puglia, the regional railway company is not called Trenitalia, but Ferrovie del Sud Est). With this solution, your journey will take 7 hours 20 minutes and will cost 50€ on average. Everyday, you can find a couple of trains from Rome to Lecce, the first leaving at 08:05 and the other at 02:55pm from Termini station. Alternatively, you can get on an Intercity train to Bari, change with a regional train to Lecce and then change again for the last regional train to Gallipoli, or even go for a longer (and more expensive) journey, with an Italo train from Rome to Salerno, a regional train to Caserta, a Frecciargento from here to Lecce and, finally, a regional train to your destination - which would cost you about 70€ overall. As for the Ferrovie del Sud Est trains from Lecce to Gallipoli, there are departures from 05:54am to 09:04pm everyday, with a train every hour on average - useful information if you don’t want to wait long after getting off the train from Rome. Travelling this week, you can expect prices vary from 40€ to 80€, considering the overall journey from the Italian capital to the Salento town; if you book about one month in advance though, you can get deals as low as 27€ and save an average 42% off your ticket.
